Phil Plant is a family therapist in private practice in Huntsville, Alabama. Phil began his career strengthening families and coaching parents in raising responsible teens to become well-adjusted, responsible adults. Today, through his work as an interventionist and recovery specialist, Phil is recognized as one of the country's leaders in the field of addiction and co-occuring treatment.
Phil's therapeutic experience began sixteen (18) years ago (2009) in Linden, TN, where he worked with adolescents at Youth Village's Deer Valley Residential Treatment Program. He continued with Youth Village and was promoted to a supervisory position at their adolescent boy's group homes in Nashville, TN. Phil completed his Master's in Professional Counseling while working as Director of Operations and Therapeutic Services at "My Friend's House," an adolescent boy's group home in Franklin, TN. While at "My Friend's House," Phil began a relationship with the Williamson County Courts as well as with the Williamson County Department of Children's Services (DCS).
At the request of the Williamson County Juvenile Court, Phil developed an anger management program for adolescents and their families. Over 1100 families attended this peer/family-focused program, making it the most successful program within Tennessee's Juvenile Court system. Phil also developed and implemented court-mandated Alcohol and Drug Programs for families, court-mandated parenting and co-parenting programs and has been recognized by the courts of Williamson, Davidson, Shelby and counties as an expert in child and family matters. Phil is often asked by the courts and DCS to do an assessment of needs/services for difficult and high-profile cases brought before the courts.
Above and Beyond Sobriety was created in 2014, as a means to work with families who have a family member(s) struggling with dependency and addiction and/or co-occuring disorders. As sole proprietor of Above and Beyond Sobriety, Phil works nationally facilitating interventions, and treatment/recovery consultations, as well as speaking on recovery, targeting young adults and the families that love them. Working from the perspective that addiction is a family disease, he has helped over 350 families across the country find hope through recovery with his intervention and family restructuring work since starting Above and Beyond Sobriety.
Phil has also been recognized for his work with spousal and elderly addiction.
With the belief that success stems from the ability to develop and cultivate successful relationships, Phil has formed lasting, working relationships with many of the top treatment providers in the country. He has provided trainings for, and co-sponsored local and national events with, industry leaders such as Foundations Recovery Network, Caron Treatment Centers, Summit Behavioral Health, BRC Recovery and Journey Pure.
In 2016, Phil was named by Google Analytics as “10% of the Finest,” which recognizes the most influential people on social media in addiction recovery.
Phil has served as a clinical consultant for LifeCare Family Services Nashville, TN and as a clinical consultant with Elk River Adolescent Treatment Facility and Foundations Recovery Network. He has served on the Williamson County DUI Court Foundation Board, and was an active in Williamson County CASA - chairing their initial fundraiser, “Voices of the Children” for the first two years, Abe's Garden, Dismas House, SHATTERPROOF, and the Magdalene House.
In 2024, Phil made the decision to move his practice to Huntsville, where he is collaborating on the innovative recovery concept for individuals struggling with PTSD, and partnering with The Ridge Residential Treatment Center for adolescents.
Phil has dedicated his career to helping others navigate mental health and substance use challenges.
